Burst Timers can save each run to the Health app as a workout, including heart rate and energy burned. This article explains how it works on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Why Burst Timers Asks for Health Access
The first time you start a run on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, Burst Timers asks for access to Health. During a run, Burst Timers runs a workout session, which keeps the timer counting and alerting you in the background, when your iPhone is locked or your wrist is down.
The workout session runs whether or not you save workouts. Nothing is saved to Health unless you turn on Save Workouts to Health.
Turning On Saving
- Open Settings in Burst Timers.
- Turn on Save Workouts to Health.
- Choose a Workout Type. The default is HIIT.
- Start your next run. Burst Timers asks for permission to save workouts and to read and save heart rate and active energy, if you haven't allowed it already.
Saving is set separately on each device. Turn it on on the device you run the timer on: iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. Saving to Health isn't available on Mac.
Workout Types
The Popular section lists HIIT, Functional Strength Training, Traditional Strength Training, Core Training, Cross Training, Mixed Cardio, Running, Cycling, Jump Rope, and Other. The All section lists the rest of the workout types supported by Health, from American Football to Yoga.
What Is Saved
- A workout of the type you chose, covering the time the run was in progress. Paused time isn't counted as active time.
- Heart rate and active energy burned, when available. On Apple Watch these are measured during the run. On iPhone and iPad, they depend on the sensors and devices available to Health.
When a Workout Is Saved
- Completed runs are always saved.
- Runs ended early are saved only if at least as much time as one work period has passed. This keeps accidental starts out of Health.
Changes to Save Workouts to Health and Workout Type apply from the next run.
Viewing Your Workouts
Open the Health app or the Fitness app on iPhone to see workouts saved by Burst Timers.
Changing Health Permissions
In the Health app on iPhone, tap your profile picture, tap Apps under Privacy, and choose Burst Timers. You can turn each type of data on or off, or turn off Save Workouts to Health in Burst Timers to stop saving.
If you deny access, the timer still works. Workouts just aren't saved.
