Getting started with PDF Split & Merge

PDF Split & Merge is a Mac, iPhone, and iPad app for splitting PDF documents, creating new PDFs from PDFs and image files, and compressing PDFs.

System requirements

  • macOS 14 or newer
  • iOS or iPadOS 18 or newer

What you can do

  • Split a PDF into separate PDF files.
  • Export PDF pages as image files.
  • Export all pages, one page, or a page range.
  • Merge a selected PDF page range into one new PDF.
  • Create one PDF from multiple PDFs and supported image files.
  • Reorder, sort, remove, or clear files before creating a PDF.
  • Compress a PDF to reduce its file size.

Main sections

The app has three main sections. Their names depend on your device:

  • On Mac, select Split PDF, Create / Merge PDF, or Compress PDF in the sidebar.
  • On iPhone and iPad, select Split, Merge, or Compress. Depending on the available space, iPad may show these items in a tab bar or sidebar.

Use Split or Split PDF to extract pages from an existing PDF. Use Merge or Create / Merge PDF to combine PDFs and images into one PDF. Use Compress or Compress PDF to make a PDF smaller.

Adding files

You can add files in these ways:

  • Click or tap Choose PDF... to select the PDF you want to split or compress.
  • Click or tap Add Files... to select one or more PDFs or supported images to merge.
  • Click or tap Add Photos... to select images from your photo library in the order you want to add them.
  • Drag files into the drop area. Drag and drop is especially useful on Mac and iPad.

On iPhone and iPad, the document picker can access files stored locally, in iCloud Drive, or with another configured file provider.

Where files are saved

  • On Mac, choose the destination when you click Split PDF..., Split and Merge PDF..., Create PDF..., or Compress PDF....
  • On iPhone and iPad, the app processes the files first and then opens the Files export sheet. Choose On My iPhone, On My iPad, iCloud Drive, or another file provider to finish saving the result.

Canceling the Files export sheet does not save the generated files.

Getting help

On Mac, choose Help > PDF Split & Merge Help. On iPhone and iPad, tap the question mark in the toolbar.
