Money Owed is an Apple app for keeping track of balances between people. Create an account for each person or shared obligation, record transactions, and share an account through iCloud when both people need to see the same information.
What is Money Owed?
Money Owed keeps a running balance for each account. A positive balance means Owed to you. A negative balance means You owe. A zero balance means Settled up. Balances and transactions remain available offline, and changes sync through iCloud when the device can connect.
You can add manual and split transactions, view balance history, and share accounts without Pro. Money Owed Pro adds receipt and PDF attachments, recurring transactions, automatic interest, CSV import, CSV and PDF export, notifications, App Lock, widgets, and the Apple Watch app.
Requirements
- iPhone or iPad running iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later
- Mac running macOS 15.0 or later
- Apple Watch running watchOS 10.0 or later for the Watch app
- Money Owed Pro for widgets and the Apple Watch app
- An Apple Account signed in to iCloud for synchronization and sharing
There is no Android, web, or Windows version of Money Owed. The Watch app works independently from the iPhone, iPad, and Mac app, with a smaller set of features and its own iCloud connection.
First Launch
On a new installation, Money Owed waits for its initial iCloud synchronization before deciding whether onboarding is needed. If no account is found and onboarding has not already been completed, the welcome screen appears.
Start a new account
- Open Money Owed.
- Review the welcome screen and choose Get Started.
- Create your first account when the account list appears.
Import old data
If the old Money Owed service is available and the import period has not ended, onboarding may also show Import from Old Money Owed. This imports accounts you owned, their transaction history, supported attachments, and valid weekly or monthly automated movements as recurring schedules. It does not import accounts that someone else owned and shared with you. See Import from Old Money Owed for the full process and its deadline.
Create Your First Account
- From the Money Owed account list, open Actions.
- Choose New Account.
- Enter a person or obligation in Name.
- Choose a Currency.
- Optionally choose Add Photo.
- Choose Save.
Use one account for one balance. For example, create separate accounts for a roommate, a friend, and a loan. A new account starts with no transactions and a settled balance.
Add Your First Transaction
- Open an account.
- Choose Add Transaction.
- Enter a Description.
- Enter a positive or negative amount. Positive amounts are owed to you; negative amounts are amounts you owe.
- Choose a Date and optionally enter Notes.
- Choose Save.
The amount field accepts expressions such as 18.50 + 4.20. Enter a positive or negative value such as +25.00 or -25.00; the device locale controls the decimal separator. See Transactions, Attachments, Splits, and Deletion Rules for editing, attachments, and deletion limits.
Main Areas
Account list
The main screen shows each account separately. Open Sort to choose Owed to You First, You Owe First, Largest Amount First, Smallest Amount First, Name (A-Z), or Name (Z-A).
Account details
Open an account to see its current balance, balance history, and transactions. The More menu contains account editing, Recurring and Interest settings for eligible owned accounts, reports, and CSV import where available. Sharing opens iCloud sharing controls.
Sharing
Choose Sharing from an account to invite a person with Read Only or Read & Write access. Sharing is free. The owner controls the account name, currency, recurring schedules, and interest schedule.
Widgets
Money Owed Pro provides Account Balance, Accounts, and Currency Balance widgets. Open the main app to update the information shown by its widgets. If Pro access cannot be verified, widgets hide account names and balances. See Money Owed Widgets.
Apple Watch
With Money Owed Pro, the Watch app lets you create accounts, view balances and recent transactions, and add a transaction to a writable account. It syncs directly through iCloud and keeps available information on the Watch for offline use. See Money Owed on Apple Watch.
Settings
Open Settings to choose the default currency, enable new-transaction notifications, manage App Lock, view Money Owed Pro, and access the old-data import while it is available.
Offline and iCloud Behavior
Money Owed saves changes on your device immediately. You can view available balances and transactions without a network connection, and pending changes sync through iCloud when a connection is available. Sync runs when you open or return to the app and may also run when the operating system allows it in the background. The main app does not have a general manual Refresh button.
If you see iCloud Sign-In Required or Original iCloud Account Required, follow the instructions in iCloud Sync, Offline Access, and Sync Status. Money Owed does not switch existing app data to a different iCloud account without warning.
