Transactions record changes to an account balance. Add a positive amount when money is owed to you and a negative amount when you owe money. Transactions use the account's currency and are shown from your perspective.
Add a Manual Transaction
- Open an account.
- Choose Add Transaction.
- Enter a Description.
- Enter a positive or negative amount, such as
+25.00or-25.00. - Choose a Date.
- Optionally enter Notes.
- Optionally add an attachment if you have Pro.
- Choose Save.
A description and non-zero amount are required. The footer in the editor explains: Positive amounts are owed to you. Negative amounts are amounts you owe.
Enter Math in an Amount
The amount field accepts calculations that produce a positive or negative result. You can use:
- Addition:
+ - Subtraction:
-or− - Multiplication:
*or× - Division:
/or÷ - Parentheses
- The device locale's decimal separator
For example, enter 18.50 + 4.20 to calculate a combined amount before saving. If the calculation is invalid, Money Owed may identify a character or number that cannot be used or show Finish the calculation. It can also report a missing closing parenthesis, prevent division by zero, or say that the result is too large.
Edit a Transaction
Tap an existing manual transaction to open Edit Transaction. You can edit it only when:
- The account is writable.
- You created the transaction.
- The transaction was entered manually rather than created by a schedule.
Participants cannot edit the owner's manual transactions. Transactions created by recurring and interest schedules open as read-only details.
Delete a Transaction
The Delete action is intentionally available only for the newest eligible manual transaction. All of these conditions must be true:
- The account is writable.
- You created the transaction.
- The transaction was entered manually rather than created by a schedule.
- It is the most recently created transaction in that account.
- It was created less than five minutes ago.
The five-minute rule uses the transaction's creation time, not its selected Date. If any condition is false, the Delete action may not appear. A message can explain that only the last transaction can be deleted, that you can change only your own transaction, that the five-minute limit has passed, that a scheduled transaction cannot be changed, or that the shared account is read-only.
Attachments
Money Owed Pro lets you attach one image or PDF to a transaction. In the editor, choose Add Attachment or Replace Attachment, then choose Choose from Photos or Choose from Files. The file must be 25 MB or smaller.
Free users can view existing attachments with Quick Look. Removing an attachment still requires that the transaction itself be editable. Choose Remove Attachment to remove it.
Money Owed accepts new images and PDFs. A transaction imported from the old service may include a document or archive because the old importer supports additional historical file types. Money Owed explains when a selected attachment cannot be loaded, is not an image or PDF, or exceeds the 25 MB limit.
Split a Transaction Across Accounts
From the main screen, choose Actions > Split Transaction. Select at least two writable accounts that use the same currency, enter the description, date, notes, and amount, then choose a mode. After you select the first account, accounts using other currencies are unavailable.
Split Evenly
Split Evenly divides the total as evenly as the currency allows. If the amount cannot be divided exactly, the first selected accounts receive the smallest remaining portions.
Same for Each
Same for Each adds the entered amount to every selected account.
Split-created transactions display a split indicator. Each resulting transaction is subject to the normal account permissions and deletion rules.
Transactions Created by a Schedule
Recurring and interest schedules create transactions when due. These automatic transactions cannot be edited or deleted and do not send new-transaction notifications. Change or disable the schedule instead. See Recurring Transactions and Automatic Interest.
Transactions on Apple Watch
With Money Owed Pro, the Watch app lets you add a transaction by entering an amount, choosing They owe me or I owe them, and entering a description. The date is always the current time. The Watch does not support notes, attachments, editing, or deletion. See Money Owed on Apple Watch.
