Money Owed keeps account information on your device for offline access and syncs owned and shared accounts through iCloud when it is available.
Where Account Data Is Stored
- The main app keeps account information and files in its private storage on your device.
- Accounts you own sync through your private iCloud storage.
- Shared accounts sync through iCloud for the people you invite.
- Account images and transaction attachments are included when those accounts sync.
- The Apple Watch keeps its own copy and syncs directly through iCloud.
The Watch is not a direct view of the iPhone app. The Watch and main app each keep and sync their own copy of your accounts.
iCloud Sharing
Account shares are limited to specified recipients. Public account sharing is not enabled. The owner controls who has access and whether each participant is Read Only or Read & Write.
Leaving a shared account removes that account and its files from the participant's device. Stopping sharing removes participant access but leaves the owner's account and transactions available to the owner. Deleting an owned account permanently deletes its transactions, attachments, and account image.
Offline Access
Money Owed saves changes on your device immediately. Available balances and transactions remain visible without a network connection. Pending changes sync through iCloud and may show Waiting to sync or Sync needs attention until that completes.
Existing app data remains associated with the iCloud account originally used with Money Owed. If the device is signed in to a different Apple Account, Money Owed shows Original iCloud Account Required and pauses sync rather than silently moving that data.
Widgets
Widgets require Money Owed Pro and do not connect to iCloud themselves. The main app prepares the account identifiers, display names, currencies, and balances that widgets need and stores that information on the device.
When Pro is not active, a widget shows Money Owed Pro Required. When Pro access has not yet been checked, it asks you to open the main Money Owed app and retry. Account names and balances stay hidden until Pro access is verified. The operating system can also hide this information in places such as the Lock Screen. Widgets use account monograms rather than account image files.
Apple Watch
The Watch app requires Money Owed Pro. After Pro access is verified, it keeps account information for offline use, syncs directly through iCloud, and saves accounts and transactions created on the Watch until they can sync. It does not depend on the iPhone app to copy account data. See Money Owed on Apple Watch for its features and limitations.
Purchases
Money Owed Pro purchases and restoration are handled through the App Store and RevenueCat. Money Owed uses an anonymous RevenueCat identifier for purchase operations and does not send account or transaction contents to RevenueCat to display Pro features or restore an App Store purchase.
Support Requests
When you choose Submit a Support Request, the form includes the Money Owed product and the current Apple platform so support can route the request. When Pro access is active, the form can also include the anonymous RevenueCat original App User ID to help investigate purchase issues. The identifier is omitted when Pro access is inactive or has not been verified.
Support requests are handled by Zendesk. Include only the information needed to explain the issue. Do not include account contents, passwords, purchase credentials, or private iCloud invitation links.
Notifications
Notifications require your permission in Settings on iPhone and iPad or System Settings on Mac. The app can create an alert for a new manual transaction from the other person in a shared account. Notification text may include the transaction description and account name, so the operating system may display financial information outside the app, including on the Lock Screen.
Notification permission is specific to each device. The setting inside Money Owed may sync through iCloud, but you must allow system notifications separately on each device.
App Lock
App Lock requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode before opening the main app. When Money Owed is no longer onscreen, it blurs account information in the app switcher.
App Lock restricts access to the app and adds a privacy blur. It does not add a separate Money Owed encryption layer to data stored by the app. App Lock is not available in the Watch app or widgets.
Permissions
Money Owed requests system access only when a feature needs it:
- Photos or camera: account images and photo attachments
- Files: selected PDF attachments and CSV import
- Notifications: new-transaction alerts
- Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode: App Lock
- iCloud: account synchronization and sharing
Old-Data Import
The temporary Import from Old Money Owed flow sends the username and password you enter securely to the old Money Owed service. After your account list loads, the app clears the password and uses the service's temporary sign-in information for the remaining import requests. The old service is not used for normal Money Owed accounts.
Privacy Disclosures
The app's current privacy manifest declares no tracking. It declares a linked user identifier used for app functionality because a support request from a Pro user can include the anonymous RevenueCat original App User ID. This technical declaration does not replace the privacy disclosures required for iCloud, App Store purchases, notifications, support, and the temporary old-data import service. Review the current App Store privacy information and any published Money Owed privacy policy before making legal or retention assumptions.
Do not include passwords, purchase credentials, or private iCloud invitation links in support requests. See Troubleshooting Money Owed for the information that is useful when reporting a problem.
