Money Owed uses iCloud sharing to let specific people access an account. Sharing is free. The owner chooses whether each participant can only view the account or can also add transactions.
Share an Account
- Open the account.
- Choose Sharing.
- If the account is not shared, choose Share Account.
- Use the iCloud sharing flow to invite a specific person.
- Choose Read Only or Read & Write access.
Money Owed does not enable public sharing. Invitations are limited to the recipients selected by the owner.
Manage Participants
For an existing share, choose Invite or Manage People. The People section shows each participant and a status such as:
- Accepted
- Invitation pending
- Removed
- Status unknown
The owner can change a participant's permission between Read Only and Read & Write, choose Remove Person, or choose Stop Sharing.
Permissions
Read Only
A read-only participant can view balances, balance history, schedules, transactions, and attachments. They cannot change shared account information, add transactions, or manage sharing, but they can set a Private Alias that appears only for them.
Read & Write
A participant with write access can add transactions. Their own manual transactions follow the normal editing and deletion rules. They cannot change the shared account image, the account name or currency set by the owner, or configure the owner's recurring and interest schedules.
Owner
The owner controls the account name, image, currency, participants, sharing, recurring schedules, and interest schedule. The owner can also add, edit, and delete eligible transactions they created.
Private Aliases
When a participant edits a shared account, the name field is shown as Private Alias. The alias is visible only to that participant and does not change the owner's account name. Leave it blank to return to the owner's name.
Private aliases are useful when you want a personal reminder without changing the account name set by the owner.
Account Images
Only the owner can change the shared account image. Every participant can view the image, including when it is available offline, but participants cannot edit it.
Stop Sharing
As the owner, choose Stop Sharing from the Sharing screen and confirm. The app warns:
Participants will lose access. Your account and transactions remain available.
Stopping sharing removes participant access but does not delete the owner's account or transaction history.
Leave a Shared Account
As a participant, choose Leave Shared Account and confirm Leave This Shared Account? or Leave Account. The shared account and its files are removed from your device. Leaving does not delete the owner's account or transaction history.
Sharing and Pro
Sharing is not a Pro feature. Unlimited accounts, accounts shared with you, and Read & Write participation remain free. Pro is required only for separate features such as new attachments, recurring schedules, interest schedules, reports, CSV import, notifications, App Lock, widgets, and the Apple Watch app.
Sharing and Sync
Shared account changes are saved on the device first and then synced through iCloud. Both people should remain signed in to iCloud and open Money Owed periodically. See iCloud Sync, Offline Access, and Sync Status if a participant or transaction is not appearing.
