General Questions
What is Money Owed?
Money Owed is a native Apple app for tracking balances between people. Each account has a running balance and transaction history that remain available offline and sync through iCloud.
Which platforms are supported?
- iPhone and iPad: iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later
- Mac: macOS 15.0 or later
- Apple Watch: watchOS 10.0 or later with Money Owed Pro
- Widgets: supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac widget sizes with Money Owed Pro
Money Owed does not currently provide an Android, web, or Windows app.
Does Money Owed require an account on a Money Owed server?
No. Current accounts are saved on your devices and synced through iCloud. The old Money Owed service is used only by the temporary import described in Import from Old Money Owed.
What do the balance labels mean?
A positive balance is Owed to you. A negative balance is You owe. A zero balance is Settled up. The balance is calculated from your perspective.
Does Money Owed convert currencies?
No. Accounts keep their own currencies, and Money Owed never performs exchange-rate conversion. The Currency Balance widget combines only accounts using its current currency, and all accounts in a split transaction must use the same currency.
Accounts and Transactions
How do I create an account?
From the main screen, choose Actions > New Account. Enter a name and currency, optionally add a photo, and choose Save. See Accounts, Balances, Photos, and Currencies.
Why is an account's currency locked?
Currency can be changed only before the account has any transactions. After the first transaction, the currency is locked so historical amounts keep their meaning.
Why can I not find Delete for a transaction?
Deletion is deliberately limited. The transaction must be manual, created by you, created less than five minutes ago, and be the most recently created transaction in that account. The account must also be writable. The five-minute rule uses creation time, not the transaction's selected date. Transactions added by recurring or interest schedules cannot be deleted.
Can I edit a transaction created by the other person?
No. You can edit only a manual transaction that you created in a writable account. Read-only accounts and transactions created by a schedule cannot be edited.
Can I attach a receipt?
Adding or replacing an attachment requires Money Owed Pro. You can attach one image or PDF up to 25 MB to a transaction. Existing attachments remain viewable without Pro. See Transactions, Attachments, Splits, and Deletion Rules.
Sharing and Sync
Is account sharing free?
Yes. Account sharing, invited accounts, and Read & Write participation in shared accounts remain free. The owner can invite a specific person with Read Only or Read & Write access. Public sharing is not available.
What can a read-only participant do?
A read-only participant can view the account, schedules, transactions, and attachments. They cannot change shared account information or add transactions, but they can set a Private Alias that appears only for them. A participant with write access can add transactions, but only the owner can change the shared account image, account name, currency, recurring schedules, or interest schedule.
Does Money Owed work offline?
Yes. Available balances and transactions remain on the device for offline use. Changes are saved immediately and sync through iCloud when the device is connected and still signed in to the original iCloud account.
Why does the app say "Original iCloud Account Required"?
The device is using a different iCloud account from the one previously used with Money Owed. Sign in to the original iCloud account in Settings on iPhone and iPad or System Settings on Mac. Money Owed does not automatically move existing app data to a new iCloud account because that could expose it or leave it inaccessible.
Why are widgets or the Watch not immediately up to date?
Widgets receive updated account information from the main app, so open Money Owed if a widget is behind. The Watch syncs separately through iCloud, so a transaction added there must reach the main app before a widget can show it. The operating system controls when widgets refresh their display.
Why do widgets or the Watch show a Pro access message?
Widgets and the Apple Watch app require Money Owed Pro. If Pro is not active, they show Money Owed Pro Required. If Pro access has not yet been checked, a widget asks you to open the main Money Owed app and retry, while the Watch asks you to open Money Owed on iPhone and retry. Account names and balances stay hidden until Pro access is verified.
Money Owed Pro
What does Money Owed Pro unlock?
Money Owed Pro currently unlocks attachments, recurring transactions, automatic interest, CSV and PDF export, CSV import, new-transaction notifications, App Lock, widgets, and the Apple Watch app. It is presented as a one-time unlock. See Money Owed Pro for purchase and restore instructions.
What remains free?
Unlimited accounts, manual and split transactions, sharing, shared accounts, account photos, currencies, sorting, and balance history are free.
What happens if Pro is no longer recognized?
Existing attachments remain viewable. Existing enabled recurring and interest schedules continue to run and can be disabled, but new schedules and changes require Pro. Notifications and App Lock can be turned off. New attachments, imports, and exports remain unavailable. Widgets and the Watch hide account information until Pro access is verified again.
How do I restore a purchase?
Open Settings > Money Owed Pro and choose Restore Purchases. Use the Apple Account that made the purchase. Purchase availability and product pricing are provided by the App Store and can change.
Schedules and Reports
Who controls recurring and interest schedules?
Only the owner of an account can configure its recurring and automatic interest schedules. Shared participants can see the schedules, but the account owner controls them. Transactions created by a schedule cannot be edited or deleted and do not send new-transaction notifications.
Are interest rates annual rates?
No. The rate is applied each time the schedule runs. A schedule can have daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly frequency, and each scheduled date uses the updated account balance, so interest can compound.
What does a CSV export contain?
CSV export contains chronological transactions with the fields name, change, date, balance, notes, and currency. Amounts and balances are from your perspective. Attachments are not included. PDF export creates an account statement with dates, descriptions, changes, balances, notes, and page numbers.
Notifications, App Lock, Widgets, and Watch
Which transactions send notifications?
With Pro and notification permission, Money Owed can alert you about a new manual transaction added by the other person in a shared account. It does not alert for your own transactions, transactions added by recurring or interest schedules, history downloaded for a new account, or edits to existing transactions. Alerts can be delayed or missed, and force-quitting the app can delay them.
Does App Lock add separate encryption?
App Lock uses Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode to restrict access and hide account information in the app switcher. It does not add a separate Money Owed encryption layer to data stored by the app. App Lock is not available in the Watch app or widgets.
Why does a widget not total all my accounts?
Money Owed does not combine different currencies. The Currency Balance widget shows the overall balance only for accounts using its current currency. It initially chooses an available currency automatically, and you can edit the widget to choose another. The Accounts widget always lists accounts separately.
What can I do on Apple Watch?
With Money Owed Pro, the Watch app can create accounts, show balances and up to 20 recent transactions, and add a transaction to a writable account. It does not edit existing accounts or transactions, delete transactions, manage sharing, add notes or attachments, import or export files, or configure recurring and interest schedules.
Old Data and Support
Can I import data from the old Money Owed?
Only during the temporary import period and while the old service is available. The importer accepts accounts you owned, recalculates their balances, carries valid weekly or monthly automated movements into future recurring schedules, and carries valid active percentage interest into a future monthly UTC schedule. Past automatic activity remains ordinary imported transactions. Shared accounts must be imported by their original owner and shared again. See Import from Old Money Owed.
How do I report a problem?
Before contacting support, read Troubleshooting Money Owed and include your platform, OS version, Money Owed version, the affected account or feature, what you expected, what happened, and the steps that reproduce the problem. Do not include passwords or private iCloud invitation links in a report.
