Money Owed includes a temporary importer for accounts from the previous Money Owed service. The importer is available only before 2027-01-01 00:00:00 UTC and while the old service is available. The old service is scheduled to shut down at the end of 2026.
Where to Find the Importer
The import flow can appear in either place:
- First-launch welcome screen: Import from Old Money Owed
- Settings > Old Money Owed > Import from Old Money Owed
If the option is not shown, the deadline may have passed or the old service may be unavailable. The importer cannot be used after the import period ends.
Sign In to the Old Service
- Open Import from Old Money Owed.
- Enter the Username and Password used by the previous Money Owed app.
- Choose Sign In.
- Review the accounts returned by the old service.
Your username and password are sent securely to the old Money Owed service to sign in. After your account list loads, Money Owed clears the password and uses temporary sign-in information from the service for the rest of the import. Do not reuse your Money Owed password anywhere else or include it in a support request.
What Can Be Imported?
The importer includes accounts you created in the old service. Accounts that someone else owned and shared with you are not imported because their history belongs to that owner.
- Review the Accounts to Import list.
- Select the accounts to import.
- Continue through the currency, attachment, and recurring-schedule notices.
- Review the import summary.
Accounts already imported show Already imported. Money Owed prevents the same old account from being imported twice. Multiple selected accounts are imported independently, so the summary can contain both Imported Accounts and Could Not Import.
Imported Account Behavior
- Imported accounts become private accounts that you own in the new app.
- Balances are recalculated from the imported transactions rather than copied from the old service.
- Shared accounts must be imported by their original owner.
- After import, the owner must share the account again through iCloud.
- Imported transactions retain their historical dates and amounts when Money Owed can read them.
- Active weekly and monthly automated movements become recurring schedules, starting with the first future transaction date in UTC after import.
- Active percentage interest becomes a monthly UTC interest schedule, starting with the first future interest date after import.
If the old service reports that an account was shared with you, ask its owner to import it and share it again from the new Money Owed app.
Recurring Schedules
The importer carries over valid fixed-amount automated movements from the old service. Past movements remain ordinary imported transactions. The recurring schedule starts at its next future transaction date, so those past transactions are not created again.
The old service ran automated movements in UTC, so imported schedules keep UTC as their time zone. The old service skipped a monthly schedule when its selected day did not exist. Money Owed instead runs schedules on the 29th, 30th, or 31st on the last valid day of shorter months. The import summary calls out those schedules for review.
Old percentage interest follows the same transition rule: past interest remains ordinary imported history, while a valid active rate and scheduled day become an enabled monthly UTC schedule beginning on its next future date. Interest scheduled for the 29th, 30th, or 31st runs on the last valid day of shorter months, and the import summary calls out that behavior.
A schedule with invalid information does not prevent the account history from importing. The summary identifies any recurring or interest schedule that was skipped because its name, amount, rate, frequency, or scheduled day could not be used.
Currency Handling
Recognized three-letter currency codes, such as EUR or USD, import directly. A symbol that identifies one currency, such as €, can be recognized automatically. Symbols that can mean more than one currency, such as $, ¥, £, and kr, require a choice. Unknown values require an Import as currency selection.
Choosing a replacement currency does not perform conversion. It interprets the old numeric amounts in the selected currency. Choosing a currency with fewer decimal places can round imported amounts. The summary shows Imported in [CODE] without converting the amounts.
Old Attachments
The importer can attempt to import old attachments up to 25 MB each. It supports:
- JPG and JPEG
- GIF
- PNG
- TIFF
- DOC and DOCX
- XLS and XLSX
- ZIP
Some attachment failures appear as warnings, so the account and transaction can still import. Connection, sign-in, service, or incomplete-download failures can stop the account import. A warning may say that the old service no longer has the file, its information is incomplete, its type is unsupported, or it exceeds the 25 MB limit. The summary reports 1 attachment imported or N attachments imported. It also reports 1 recurring schedule imported or N recurring schedules imported, and shows Interest settings imported when applicable.
Common Import Errors
- Could not connect to the previous version of Money Owed. Check your internet connection and try again.
- Incorrect username or password.
- The previous version of Money Owed could not complete the request. Try again later.
- This account was shared with you, so its history belongs to the person who created it. Ask them to import it and share it again.
- This account's balance is too large to import.
Check the old username and password, confirm that the service is available, and read the complete summary after each attempt. An attachment warning or recurring-schedule notice may not require repeating the account import, but a connection, sign-in, service, or incomplete-download failure may require another attempt.
After Import
Review account names, currencies, balances, transaction history, recurring schedules, and imported attachments. Share imported accounts again from Sharing if another person needs access. Use Export CSV or Export PDF with Money Owed Pro if you need a copy of the imported account history.
